The Colour of Magic

“ The Colour of Magic” is this years Durban July 2017 theme. Race day goers and punters are in for a year that will no doubt mystify , conjure and delight.

Jump into the fantasy world of illusion and recreate some of last century’s most prolific magicians, illusionists and entertainers looks. Think velour in jewel tones and sequin surfaces that capture the mystical energy the day evokes.

From Wizardry to sorcery, delight in top hats and tails , capes and Victorian era inspired silhouettes.

Stripe Job

What is it about a stripe that makes me ever so anxious ? There is no denying how popular , varied and classical this trend is, but then why do I feel like a stripe is one of this season’s most boldest fashion statements I ask you ?

Perhaps stripes are that family member that doesn’t give a dam? Maybe it’s the challenge it presents in choosing the right version of it to flatter one’s torso? Or maybe , just maybe , it’s the fear of the ability to pull off a trend that is so longstanding few could possibly do it’s predecessors justice?

Getting this trend right most likely then rests on utilizing stripes in the most traditional of ways . If you are looking at investment pieces a magnificent stripe trouser or cashmere jersey is probably the best bet in winning the fashion stakes .

Both can transition into wardrobes effortlessly and are more than likely to withstand seasonal favor.

Whilst the world feels like it may be going crazy right now (well at least in South Africa) it is no surprise that slow fashion ideals like Embroidery take center stage on catwalks and in retail establishments a like .

According to Tara St James in her piece “ The Business of Ethical Fashion“ for Notjustalabel.com, “Slow Fashion is the movement of designing, creating, and buying garments for quality and longevity. James goes on to say that slow fashion encourages slower production schedules, fair wages, lower carbon footprints, and (ideally) zero waste. She surmises that people have reached a place in society where garments seen on a runway today are knocked off and available in stores tomorrow. By adding transparency about our production process and educating consumers about the craft of clothes making, we hope consumers will begin to understand what is required of producing a well-made garment”

And the great thing about this trend is that it is genuinely hard to get wrong. Whether it is a hint on a jacket lapel or an all over dress – embroidery has never been more fashionable.

Whether it is a vintage piece revived and styled with fresh patent accessories or freshly pressed haberdashery embroidery placement don’t miss out on this seasons fashion trend.

Out of Africa

Iconic , beautiful and effortlessly chic are a few of the words that come to mind when this image of Lauren Hutton pops up on my feed. And what better image to inspire those who’s wardrobe pines for far flung holidays in remote , untouched Africa.

I don’t know if it’s the carefree 1970’s attitude , most notably in the pose or her vivacious smile but when I saw this , I knew that this image would inspire a little bit more than a button up safari suit .

One of the biggest ways to channel this trend into your wardrobe is not only the use of khaki and kale but stylized deep pleat pocket detail.  Whilst the above visuals are great reference points, the age-old rule of simplicity still exists.  Here are a few key pointers for any fashionista that wants to integrate this trend into their seasonal style.

PANTONE 17-2034 Pink Yarrow

There is no greater testimony to the lyrics of the great Steve Tyler’s Pink than the colour Pink Yarrow’s rise this fashion season. It’s frisky, vibrant and likely to be the colour of choice for those who feel that shades of green don’t quite do it for them.

With a definite 80’s obsession this fashion season, pink was invariably going to take centre stage. Interestingly, when one delves into research surrounding Pink Yarrow , this colour has a lot more in common with the Pantone Greenery than meets the eye.

Pink Yarrow is essentially a flower ( Pink in colour ), with green leaves, that is used for it’s essence in herbalism . According to the flower society report that documents Dr. Mesich ‘s findings in the use of the flower , it is a remedy used for ages and ages for “wounded warriors.”

Mesich goes onto state that Pink Yarrow specifically “ corresponds to the “root” chakra, the red chakra and imparts a sense of strong grounded ness ” . (http://www.flowersociety.org/drmesich.htm)

Perhaps it is this factor that has lead to this colors inclusion in the Pantone Colour Institutes Fashion Colour report, Spring 2017.

The Pantone Institution feels that Pink Yarrow is “Tropical and festive, Pink Yarrow is a whimsical, un-ignorable hue that tempts and tantalizes. Bold, attention getting and tempestuous, the lively Pink Yarrow is a captivating and stimulating color that lifts spirits and gets the adrenaline going “

Greenery: Pantone Colour of the Year 2017

Move over Serenity and Rose Quartz , Greenery is the new color kid on the block ! “Greenery” is all about taking inspiration from flourishing foliage and natures robust “tangy yellow- greens” . Frisky , revitalizing and a homage to Mother Earth this Pantone is all about us taking a moment to “breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate .”

Director of the Pantone Color Institute , Leatrice Eiseman who is tasked with the role of selecting the design Pantone annually said that the selection was based on a response to a “stressful and tense world “.

This color denotes a sense of hopefulness in its zesty hue and is set to rock 2017s design world .

” Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises ” – Pedro Calderon

From Pineapples to flamingos, few can deny the ever-popular tropical trend continued this season. Perhaps its popularity lies in the public’s ever-longing desire to holiday to some exotic destination. Whilst this may not be attainable for most they certainly are sporting their favorite tropical destination non-the less.
